*NEW* YSL Fusion Ink Cushion Foundation

Beauty, Makeup

YSL fushion ink cushion foundation review

Hi my lovelies!

YSL caught up with the #cushionfever and its new product was actually launched in Singapore! Such a rare moment for Singaporean beauty lovers really. We always are one of the last people on earth to get our hands on popular beauty products (e.g. Sephora in Singapore does not carry Kat Von D, we haven’t had the new Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bon palette… heck, we haven’t even gotten the Too Faced Hangover Primer which launched in US a year ago)

Grumblings aside, I was so excited about getting my hands on this beauty that I just had to make a video on it.

THIS PACKAGING IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEAUTY PRODUCT PACKAGING I’VE SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE. Whilst the product itself didn’t blow me away, honestly I love the packaging so much that I want to carry it in my bag forever and always.

I’ll do a quick write-up on how the product fared, but if you want to see how it looks like and a deeper insight on the product, then just click ‘play’on the video and support me!

PROS

  • super pigmented – so it easily covers up blemishes
  • a little product goes a loooong way
  • dewy and fresh finish that looks great for up to 6 hours
  • CRAZILY BEAUTIFUL PACKAGING
  • easy to touch up since it’s so portable

CONS

  • only 6 shades in total
  • products makes your face super oily after 6 hours
  • it *may* have caused my face to break out a tiny bit

Cheapest and Best Primer Ever?

Beauty, Makeup

Hi lovelies!

The beauty community has been going crazy with the Nivea Men After Shave balm used as a primer which started from Nikki Tutorials on YouTube. Sheer curiosity got the better of me eventually so I caved in and purchased it – much to my boyfriend’s bewilderment.

Since Youtube is flooded with first impressions, I decided to do something different, a solid 10 hour wear test. I have had used this as a primer once before filming and it impressed me so much that I wanted to take it one step further.

The video is extremely detailed so I won’t write much on it, but I will say that my skin is combination type and this has worked better on me than Urban Decay setting spray. There is no setting spray needed with this baby. What really sold me on this mens product is the fact that it really is 2-in-1 : It calms the skin and serves as an awesome primer beautifully.

Hope you guys enjoy the video! I’m still working on my awkwardness infront of the camera. Or maybe I’m just always this awkward.

xx

Behind the Scenes with Roxanne Sylvia

Beauty, Makeup

Youthful, ferocious and admirably ambitious –  she’s merely 22 years of age but Roxanne carries herself with decided maturity. She discovered at the tender age of 17 that being her own boss was the only way to go after lasting barely 3 months in a property company. She then embarked on 4 years of freelance modelling which she decided to cut short. Her confidence as a fashion model had faltered due to abrupt weight gain. Refusing to allow this change in physical appearance impede her #girlboss ambition, she took her fascination in cosmetics to a professional level by attending a make up course in Houston, Texas, 2 years ago.

Today, Roxanne is the fastest growing Indian makeup artist in Singapore. So how did she grow from zero to hero? How did she grow from having less than a hundred followers on social media to a solid combined pool of over 15,000 followers?

Q&A WITH ROXANNE SYLVIA

Hi Roxanne! What made you decide to be a #girlboss in the makeup industry?

Hi Tatum! Thank you for featuring my work in your article! I have always been intrigued by the wonders of makeup since I was a little girl. During my modelling days, I had the opportunity to work with countless MUAs – some of whom did my makeup really beautifully for photoshoots… others did not-so-great jobs. This lack of MUA talent pool in Singapore pulled me in deeper to want to be a MUA myself. Also, it was so much easier for me to do my own makeup than to trust someone else with my face… it didn’t take long for people to realize that I was good at doing my own makeup and that really motivated me to hold my breath, cross my fingers and venture out as an independent MUA.

(Above: 2 stunning pictures from Roxanne’s modelling portfolio.)

What a ballsy move! What is the biggest challenge you face as an independent MUA in Singapore?

The biggest challenge would be having to convince people to trust me with doing a good job with their faces. I don’t blame them because it is very common to get a bad MUA if you’re not careful. I do have proof of my makeup skills on my website and Facebook page but sometimes pictures fail to make someone entirely believe in your work. That is why I feel that spreading good reviews of your work via word-of-mouth is crucial for a MUA to succeed.

I’ve had my fair share of bad MUAs too! And you were definitely not one of them. I remember you did a spectacular makeover for me during a photoshoot about 3 years ago! You weren’t a professional then but it was still close to flawless!

(Laughs) Yes! I still have a picture of that… I posted it on my Facebook page all those years ago! My makeup technique has changed so much since then especially in terms of definition… attending the makeup course in Houston 2 years ago was when contouring was trending. This means that I picked contouring up from scratch and contouring has been an indispensable part of my makeup routine for all my clients since then! I am constantly improving myself to acquire the latest makeup techniques so that my clients will benefit.

(Here’s an embarrassing picture of infant me 3 years ago at an outdoor photoshoot for which Roxanne had done my makeup and hair)

Now tell me the secret behind your social media fame. You actually attracted thousands of followers over just a few months! People usually take years to get to that level. How did you do it?

I don’t upload pictures often – but when I do, I make sure that the picture post is of good quality (especially on Instagram). The images I share are always different… I change my hair colour regularly… this keeps people interested to find out what my next hair colour would be. Also, I think my signature ‘resting bitch face’ (RBF) also adds to the charm of my posts – according to my recent selfie that I posted on Instagram 1500 people quite like my RBF.  Lastly, tagging the official accounts of the makeup brands that you use in your beauty selfies will definitely gain you many more followers.

Personally, I have dolled up many local celebrities for their castings… they usually tag me on their photos as a way of saying ‘thank you’ so that also does bring in many followers to my account. It’s a fantastic form of publicity.  I’m really fortunate to have such links which has established when I used to act on local TV… it definitely has opened quite a few doors for me as a MUA.

I feel so honoured to be interviewing a TV celebrity! (shrieks) Besides being a celebrity, a MUA and all that cool stuff… I know that you are also coming up with your own makeup line… you have been terribly secretive about this though. Please spill the beans!!

It’s not going to be a secret anymore because I’m ready to tell you what exactly it is that I’m doing! I am currently working on ‘Roxx Pigments‘ which are basically neon coloured eyeshadow pigments. Good bright neon shades are really not easy to get your hands on in the market today. I’ve spent the past 2 years tirelessly researching and experimenting on ways to conjure up a recipe for organically made eyeshadows in the comfort of my own home… I plan to give the samples that I come up with to a factory to mass produce once I am done manufacturing the samples. Because there are many restrictions in Singapore, I intend to launch my makeup brand overseas in about 2 to 3 years time.

You’re full of wonderful surprises! Alright, last question before we go behind the scenes with you for the Indian bridal photoshoot tonight! What advice would you give to aspiring MUAs who are afraid to go independent?

I would advise them to start by working for a well known beauty brand or outlet (such as MAC Cosmetics or Sephora) until they have gained sufficient confidence to fly solo. They should also use this job as a platform to build up a good set of photos for their portfolio. Secondly, go around doing free work! Get ‘before and after’ pictures of the makeup looks that they create and use them as promotional material to share on their social media space… this would ignite response from their existing followers which will in turn create a positive domino effect!

Lastly, never. give. up. When I started as a professional MUA 3 years ago, I only had one client in a month or two… but I had to keep going because I knew that I was in this for the win. I linked up with other freelance MUAs and slowly increased awareness of my work through social media. Today, I am fully booked for the next 1 year! I will be starting bridal makeovers from next year onwards.

FOTD feat. Colourpop’s BAE + Marc Jacobs Highliner

Beauty, Makeup

Colourpop bae marc jacobs highlighter review

Hi all you lovely people!

I woke up in an extra good mood this morning so I decided to come up with a new day time smokey eye look.

I currently have 8 unopened eyeshadow shades from Colourpop and I’m so excited to experiment with them! I chose Bae which is a deep purple colour with shimmer for today’s look. I also used my Marc Jacob’s Gel Highliner for the first time.

IMG_7396

I don’t think I need to do a full review on Colourpop because there are 832743194328 reviews online and all of them would probably have “IT’S SO AMAZING” as part of the review. I feel the exact same way. Super pigmented, crazy beautiful. ESPECIALLY this shade- Bae. A deep brinjal/ eggplant colour with tiny specks of blue reflects. Perfect shade for a day time smokey eye because its dark enough to pull off a smokey eye but not too blackish which would be way too dramatic for a day time look. I pressed this shade on my eyelids with my finger and used Too Faced’s Peanut Butter shade to smudge out the harsh lines on my lids. So easy, so pretty – took me less than 5 minutes.

IMG_7425

I first saw this Marc Jacobs highligher a few weeks ago at Sephora but refused to purchase or even swatch it because it was so pricey. But last weekend, Sephora was having a 20% off for Black Card members in Singapore so I decided to swatch it with sorta low expectations and I was blown away. I used such a light hand for the swatch yet it was so creamy, highly pigmented and stayed on my hand for hours and hours and hours. The next day I went back to purchase it because I knew it would make a great smudged eyeshadow look since its so creamy and easy to blend.

I like this Marc Jacobs Highliner more than my YSL crayon eyeliner and the Urban Decay 24 hour eyeliner which is really a big deal. It was sits so well on my waterline without smudging. I have to give this 5 stars for how easy it is to use and I would definitely repurchase despite it being pricey. I really hope they make a gift set with all the different funky shades so I can have all the shades!!

Empties Post #1

Beauty, Makeup, Scents, Skincare

IMG_2020

Hey ladies!

I’m super exhausted from work so I have been procrastinating this post for such a long time now. It’s my first empties post! I love reading other bloggers’ empties posts because that’s how I find out what the classics are in the beauty scene. Here goes my input!

1. They’re Real! Macara by Benefit

benefit they're real mascara review

I didn’t like this at all. I used it maybe about 5 times in total and it didn’t wow me so I left it aside and after 1 or 2 months it was just toooo dry to be used. I don’t its clumpy formula and how it doesn’t seem to separate my lashes to define them well. It’s also a pain to wash off. I just have so many other better mascaras and for its heavy price tag, I can confidently tell you that this is my worst mascara purchase ever.

Repurchase? Hell to the no.

2. YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch

YSL touche eclat Radiant Touch concealer review

This is my third tube because I bought it in a set of 3. I like this a lot because I think it does a decent job at both concealing and highlighting. I wish I didn’t purchase the darkest shade though because I think I should have gotten 1 shade down for it to be a better highlighter. I love how easy it is to use with a button on the top of it and the little brush applicator. It’s just mess free and does the job well. Only downside is that it doesn’t conceal dark circles completely but that’s okay because I adore a slightly imperfect look.

Repurchase? Yes, but in a lighter shade and not now because I have other concealers and highlights so yup maybe a couple of months down the road.

3. Majolica Majorca Lash Expander by Shiesedo

Shiseido Majolica Majorca Lash Expander review

I got this as a free gift from a blogger event and well it just wasn’t my thaaang. I mean, the formula is decent but a little too wet for my liking. It does what it claims – my lashes are definitely visibly much longer with this…but the problem is my natural lashes are already very long so this mascara just makes it freakishly long which I don’t like. I prefer volumizing mascaras. Also, I did not fancy its mascara wand because it looks like a comb? Its like a plastic little comb. So weird – its impossible to achieve volume with a flat plastic comb.

Repurchase? Not for me. But I do recommend it if you wish to lengthen your lashes.

4. Miss Dior Eau de Parfum

Miss Dior Eau De Parfum Review

My boyfriend got this for my birthday two years ago and I cherished it so much that I only used it for important occasions… that’s how it lasted for two years. I like its scent but I definitely prefer Chanel’s Mademoiselle to this. I only tried Mademoiselle once at my sister’s place and I fell in love with it instantaneously. I feel like Mademoiselle has this unforgettable lovely scent while Miss Dior is more of just a pleasant smell with little magic (when compared to its rival).

Repurchase? I never spend more than a 100 bucks on a perfume for myself. These kind of luxury perfumes are always gifts and well I’m hoping to receive Mademoiselle one day soon! I am definitely keeping the Miss Dior empty perfume bottle forever though because its too gorgeous.

5. Body Shop Vanilla Brulee Butter

OH MY GARD I LOVE THIS BODY BUTTER SO MUCH ITS NUTS. This is the best body butter I’ve had from Body Shop. I got it as a Vanilla Brulee set from my bestie for my birthday – comes with the lip gloss and body shop too. Its smell is divine… like creme brulee really. I love slathering on every night before I sleep – it just makes me happy and well moisturized. Usually I get really upset with Body Shop butters because its smell can be overwhelming to the extent that I get a headache. But with this particular Vanilla Brulee edition, I find its scent just a right balance of soothing and fresh.

Repurchase? Definitely. Sadly, its a limited edition so I’m not sure when its gonna be selling again. I can’t wait to try the lip gloss that comes with it too!

6. Shu Uemura Oil Cleansers

shu uemura anti oxi skin refining anti dullness cleansing oil review shu uemura skin purifier whitefficient cleansing oil review

I have 2 bottles that I switch up whenever I feel like it. One’s an anti-dullness effect and the other one is supposed to be of a whitening effect…but I cant really tell the difference in results when I use either. I guess the whitening doesn’t hurt my eyes as badly as the anti-dullness one. I used to be crazy over these oil cleansers due to the crazy hype surrounding them. However, since I discovered how magically well extra virgin coconut oil removes my makeup, I find that the Shu Uemura Oil Cleanser really pales in comparison.

Repurchase? Maybe… I do feel that coconut oil does a slightly better job and is a cheaper alternative. At the same time, I feel the Shu Uemura cleanser does a faster job than coconut oil cause it takes me a long long time to get coconut oil completely off my face.

7. Bobbi Brown Long Wearing Gel Eyeliner in Black

Bobbi Brown Long wearing Gel eyeliner review

I love this. I used to wear it almost every day or every other day until it completely dried out even though I have 40% of product left in its little glass pot. This product is hella expensive and having so much dried product is really a huge disappointment. It does a lovely job at giving me long wearing perfect simple eyeliner looks though. I used to just put this one as a fuss free and 10 seconds eye enhancer and just some light powder and walk out the door. You do need a really good eyeliner brush to give you the right kind of look though.

Repurchase? I’m currently trying out a few other eyeliners…it they don’t do as a good job, yes, I probably would have to repurchase.

8. Shu Uemura Point Cealer Concealer

shu uemura point cealer concealer review

Someone recommended this to me and it didn’t disappoint. It does cover blemishes beautifully and its not obvious at all that theres any concealer on. The magic probably lies in its creamy formula as compared to other concealers that tend to be more liquidy than creamy. The only issue is that the product given is soooo little. If you use it on a daily basis it would probably be out in 1 month. It is way overpriced for the amount given.

Repurchase? I’m trying out other drugstore concealers which work great too and I don’t think this Shu Uemura product is worth the splurge anymore. I’m going to try NARS concealer soon and if its better than this I’ll definitely be making a quick switch.

Hope this post was provided you ladies with sufficient information for your make up research! As always, thanks for reading!

YSL Trial Set (Full Review)

Beauty, Makeup, Skincare

Buenas Noches, Senoritas!

Here’s my YSL cosmetics review post which I promised 2 days ago (when my little blog was born! – yes I’m only 2 days old, please be kind!)

Last Christmas, I went a bit crazy doing some last minute festive shopping at YSL cosmetics and ended up getting a complimentary trial set! Hurray! It was a 5 piece trial set consisting of the following products in travel size:

  • Dessin Du Regard Eye Pencil in number 1 (black)
  • Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils
  • Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in number 1 (signature red)
  • Forever Light Creator Serum
  • Le Teint Touche Eclat illuminating Foundation SPF 19 (I gave this away, so no review for this, sorry!)

Read on if you wish to see pictures of the finished looks and reviews of each product!

YSL review full face

1. Dessin Du Regard Eye Pencil in number 1 (black)

PROS

  • highly pigmented
  • easy to glide on
  • long lasting
  • waterproof
  • good for smokey eye kinda look

CONS

  • too smudgey (if there’s such a word)
  • too messy
  • not for beginners, definitely
  • not easy to sharpen as the lead keeps dropping off since its too creamy

photo 3

(swatch of the eyeliner, you can see from this that it’s really creamy and pigmented – double edged sword, really)

VERDICT

Despite the many good reviews on this product, I reeeeeally did not like this – let me tell you why. It was wayy too creamy such that it was too easy to make mistakes with this pencil. I used this about 4 times already and all 4 times I had to redo it because the result was not a clean one. Too messy.

3 stars

2. Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

photo 2

(without filter)

PROS

  • beautiful, luxurious finish – clear difference from drugstore brands, imo
  • gives a fuller, thicker and longer look to your eyelashes all at once
  • super long lasting
  • I don’t think its stated as waterproof, but it definitely doesn’t smudge

CONS

  • not easy to remove, even with my shu uemura oil cleanser
  • it does provide curl, but there are other mascaras that could provide better curl.. this isn’t much of a problem though if you use an eyelash curler (which I don’t)

VERDICT

I. LOVE. IT. Honestly, this is probably the best mascara I’ve used in the past years. I love how it makes my eyelashes look… luxurious. Luxurious is really the word. I would really like to try Babydoll by YSL to compare the difference though!

5 stars

3. Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in number 1 (signature red)

photo 1

(without filter)

PROS

  • Supaaaaaaaaaa pigmented, redder than red
  • results in an illusion of thicker, sexier lips
  • long lasting
  • creamy – easy to glide on, the colour perfect after just 1 glide!
  • adds a touch of glam to any outfit
  • does not leave lips feeling dry

CON(S)

  • I’m not really used to this colour… not confident enough to pull off such a striking colour in public!
  • no stated SPF or nourishing properties stated for this product

VERDICT

Perfect for a special occasion, I would think this shade would look stunning on any skin colour and make you look good even in a potato sack.

4 stars

4. Forever Light Creator Serum

PROS

  • absorbs easily into skin due to its light watery texture
  • visible difference in skin tone after a few days of daily application
  • dark spots lightened
  • skin appears more radiant without makeup

CONS

  • no hydrating effects
  • the full bottle is pricey – from what I recall its about 80 plus for a small bottle
  • I really don’t think you should put it on a daily basis as it will dry your skin out – esp if you do not apply moisturizer religiously

VERDICT

I have  a love-hate relationship with this product. I know for sure that it has visible positive effects for my skin, but at the same time I can feel that its drying my skin too. Because of this, I use this before bed only 2-4 times a week to prevent over-reliance. Don’t think I will purchase the full bottle when my travel sized bottle retires… unless for some reason I really miss seeing my skin radiant without makeup… which probably means yes I might have to purchase it. #firstworldproblems

The best facial sunblock in the market: La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique

Beauty, Skincare

I’ve never ever used sunblock (especially not on my face) until I came back from a holiday last year with black and white patches all over my face. It was not pretty. After some intensive Google search, I found out that my skin had been overexposed to the sun and harsh weather conditions and had thus broke out in hyper-pigmentation. The first step to allow my skin to recover was to invest in a good facial sunblock to prevent further damage from being done on the affected area.

I ran to the nearest Watsons which happened to be having a storewide 20 percent sale then. After screening through most of the sunblock brands, I decided on La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique as it came up with the most number of positive reviews on MakeupAlley.com. I really hit the jackpot as I never expected my first facial sunblock purchase to be such a winner.

Features

  • 50+ SPF
  • UVB + UVA
  • Ultra light formula
  • Fluid form
  • Suitable for sensitive and sun intolerant skin (just what I needed)
  • Very water-resistant
  • made in France

PROS

  • Wallet-friendly – less than SGD 50 before discount
  • One bottle (50 ml) lasted me about 5 months (when used on an almost daily basis)
  • Does not feel sticky on the face, absorbs well
  • Requires only a small quantity for each application

CONS

  • There is not moisturizing content in this sunblock (I don’t think this is much of an issue, just slap on your regular moisturizer on top of this – easy!)

VERDICT

I LOVE it. Would definitely repurchase once I’m done with my current bottle. The hyper-pigmentation is completely gone now and my skin breaks out less, it is evident that it is well protected from harmful rays.
